SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Savannah firefighters are participating for training this week in anticipation of the arrival of their new 50-foot firefighting boat in August.
The Savannah Morning News reports (http://bit.ly/1Gk4fhY ) 18 marine firefighters are doing the second phase of a three-tiered maritime training program. They will complete their training once they receive their new MetalCraft Firestorm 50 fireboat.
A 2008 explosion at a sugar refinery and a warehouse fire at the Port of Savannah’s Ocean Terminal last year highlighted the need for the new boat, which will be able to continuously pump up to 7,000 gallons of river water per minute onto a fire.
A port security grant provided $1.2 million for the boat, leaving the department with a balance of $400,000, some of which was donated by local industry.
