4:40 P.M. — Columbus State University on Monday afternoon released its official statement on a stabbing at the school’s RiverPark Campus parking garage.
The release says CSU campus police arrested 54-year-old Johnny W. Jones of Columbus man after a reported robbery Monday morning.
Jones is charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime, armed robbery and criminal trespass.
According to reports, a CSU officer heard a disturbance in the Front Avenue parking garage about 7:30 a.m. before finding a woman who said she had just been confronted and cut by a man with a knife.
The statement says University Police reviewed surveillance footage from cameras in the garage and were able to quickly provide a description of the suspect. Within minutes, another CSU police officer spotted a man nearby matching the description and made the arrest.
CSU confirms the victim and the suspect were not university students or employees. The victim was treated and released.
“This is an example of some great police work by our team,” says CSU Police Chief Mark Lott. “As usual, we had great assistance from Columbus Police and other local emergency officials.”
11:00 A.M. — A suspect is in custody connected to an alleged aggravated assault at the Columbus State University RiverPark Campus parking garage.
An alert call to students Monday morning says the situation is “all clear” and the unknown suspect was arrested.
Details on the assault are limited at this time.
