UPDATE

10/10/17 2:30 p.m. — Following the discovery of a body on an Alabama beach, authorities have suspended the search for the second of two men who drowned trying to save a child.

The search for 21-year-old Bradley Murphy of Elberta was halted Tuesday afternoon after a body was found on a beach on the Fort Morgan Peninsula near Gulf Shores.

Fire officials say authorities had yet to positively identify the remains, but no one else was reported missing in the area.

Earlier, sheriff’s officials said the U.S. Coast Guard found the body of 47-year-old Steven Wahler, of Owensboro, Kentucky.

Baldwin County sheriff’s officials say both men disappeared in the Gulf after trying to save a 12-year-old boy who was struggling in the surf on Monday afternoon. The child made it out safely.

GULF SHORES, Ala. (AP) — Two men have drowned on the Alabama Gulf Coast while trying to save a child in surf that is still rough from Hurricane Nate.

Capt. Stephen Arnold of the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office says the Coast Guard found the body of one of the men, and the search was continuing Tuesday for the other one.

Arnold says both men went into the water Monday afternoon trying to help a 12-year-old boy who was struggling in the waves.

The boy made it out and is safe. But Arnold says searchers retrieved the body of 47-year-old Steven Wahler of Owensboro, Kentucky.

He says crews are still looking for 21-year-old Bradley Murphy of Elberta, Alabama.

Arnold says authorities aren’t aware of any relationship between the boy and the men.
