Suspect in Tuscaloosa hostage situation now in custody, hostages safe

11:45 A.M. — Tuscaloosa police say the suspect involved in a hostage situation at a local credit union has been taken into custody. The hostages are reported to be safe.

Lieutenant Richardson says the exact amount of hostages is unknown at this time; however he says at one point, they believed the count was eight.

Police also say the suspect was initially stopped for a robbery attempt, which escalated into the man taking hostages.

11:25 A.M. — Steve Swafford, CEO and President of Alabama Credit Union states, says in a statement as far as the company knows, all employees are safe at the location where an armed gunman is holding off law enforcement in a hostage situation.


TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — Tuscaloosa police are responding to a hostage situation at an Alabama Credit Union.

Lieutenant Richardson confirms to WIAT police are blocking traffic on Bryant Drive while law enforcement responds to the building.

Police say the incident started at 8:30 a.m. before the credit union opened.

They confirm one armed suspect is inside. FBI are on the scene and they have a negotiator there assisting.

The University of Alabama says via Twitter campus officers are also responding to the scene.
