COTTONDALE, Ala. (AP) — Police say a 77-year-old man is dead and his wife hospitalized after a home invasion in Cottondale.

Tuscaloosa Metro Homicide Capt. Gary Hood tells the robbery happened Wednesday night at the couple’s home.

Hood says the husband was reportedly assaulted during the attack. He also suffered a heart attack, and was pronounced dead at the hospital. It wasn’t immediately clear whether he died from the heart attack or injuries sustained in the assault.

Hood said the man’s 73-year-old wife was taken to DCH Regional Medical Center. The details and extent of her injuries weren’t immediately available.

Hood said two armed suspects entered the home and stole several items from the elderly couple, including a 2005 gold Mercury Marquis.
