COLUMBUS, Ga — A man remains in jail Wednesday as a “person of interest” in the theft of his step-grandmother’s car after her murder.
Police say 42-year-old Angelo Short was arrested from an apartment in the 700 block of Lawyers Lane at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Short was arrested in connection to an unrelated robbery at the Piggly Wiggly on Brown Ave. A police report says Short is charged with aggravated assault and robbery after an incident at the store at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.
At the same time, a separate report says Short is also charged with theft of an automobile by taking and obstruction in connection to the death of his step-grandmother, 83-year-old Peggy Gamble.
As WRBL reported, a family member found Gamble dead in her home on 8th Street Monday afternoon. Police at that time discovered her 1988 Toyota Corolla missing. The car was found abandoned later Monday evening.
Police tell News 3 Short is not charged with murder at this time, but he will be held as a “person of interest” in the ongoing investigation.
A court date is set for December 1 at 9 a.m.
