COLUMBUS, Ga — Thanksgiving Day, house fires are very common. But you have the power to take steps to prevent them.
If you’re using a turkey fryer, you should never attempt to fry a frozen turkey. It causes an explosion.
Fire Marshal Ricky Shores offers other cooking tips for those using turkey fryers.
“Make sure the area around the turkey fryer is clear. Make sure you never use it indoors or on a wooden balcony. Make sure you keep your pets and your children at least three feet away. Never leave the device. Make sure the grease doesn’t increase in temperature over 350 degrees,” says Shores.
When using kitchen appliances to cook inside, don’t leave anything you’re cooking unattended. There should be no flammable materials in your kitchen area. Also, smoke detectors should be installed in your home and working.
