COLUMBUS, Ga.- We begin with an update tonight on an explosion in Columbus.
Some neighbors are still on edge. Meantime, others say it sounded like a bomb.
Neighbors in Lokey Estates say it was a state of panic- when they heard what sounded like an explosion.
Neighbors say they were startled by the noise around six o clock last night.
Columbus Fire Marshal Ricky Shores says a young boy was playing with a lighter at a home- near the intersection of Lokey Drive and Daisy Street.
He says a grass fire started and spread to a shed which blew up several oxygen tanks inside.
One neighbor who didn’t want to be identified spoke to us.
She says, the ground even shook.
“It scared everybody to death because we didn’t know what had happened and with the trees being dry like it is we thought it might catch a house on fire that’s what I thought had happened. Everybody was running out at about six o clock last night. It scared everybody,” says a neighbor.
Fire Marshal Shores says a neighbor tried to put out the fire before crews arrived.
Tonight we’re learning that person did sustain second degree burns to the hands and face.
Fire officials are encouraging people to take fire safety measures seriously.
Those measures include: getting a smoke alarm and also making sure there’s a clear pathway in your home to make a quick and safe escape, and to also abide by the burn ban that is now in place.
