COLUMBUS, Ga. – Pastor Jamie Sanks’ church. The house of god, sits near the intersection of Flat Rock Road and Warm Springs Road. It is also ground zero for what is being referred to as “The Big Event.”

“This is love in action Phil. This is love in action. And the Bible said in 1 John 3:18: ‘Let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.’ And this is what the Big Event is all about,” says Sanks.

The staging for The Big Event is in the church parking lot. Two tractor trailers flank each side waiting to be filled with donations. Three pods are positioned right behind them, poised to accept donations as well.

“We’re asking for the community to bring food, non-perishable food items, toys for needy kids, and cold weather gear for the homeless,” says Sanks.

To bring heightened awareness to the need this time of year. Pastor Sanks is going to be spending the next 14 days living in a storage unit high above the church grounds.

“This is going to be my humble abode for the next two weeks here without the basic luxuries of life. For instance,  I’ve got a porto-potty right here. This is going to be my shower system. I’m going to have to boil some water and hoist it up here and put some in here and take a sponge bath. Nothing but a DVD player. No cable. I won’t be able to watch the Iron Bowl unfortunately. My twin bed…this is where I’ll be sleeping. I haven’t unpacked yet, though. I love a lot of pillows,” says Sanks.

The Big Event is also designed to be a spiritual blessing as well.

“Each night we’re having great pastors from different churches descend on this campus to minister to the spiritual needs of our community,” says Sanks.

Sanks will be coming down from his perch on December 3 once the trailers and pods are filled. That’s when the donations will be distributed to various area agencies. But Sanks is quick to deflect the credit.

“This is for God’s glory, not about Jamie Sanks or the House of God. It’s for the ones who are less fortunate than ourselves,” says Sanks.
