Late-season Tropical Storm Otto formed in the southwestern Caribbean and is aiming at the Central American coast approaching hurricane strength.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said the storm had top sustained winds of 70 mph as of 10:00 AM EST Wednesday and was about 200 miles off the coast moving west-northwest at 5 miles per hour.

Portions of the Caribbean coasts of Nicaragua and Costa Rica are under hurricane warnings.

Forecasters say more strengthening is expected and hurricane status could be achieved prior to landfall on Thursday.
