Firefighter dies after rescuing people from Savannah River

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — A firefighter has died after trying to save people who fell into the Savannah River.

Local news organizations report Master Firefighter Michael Curry was helping pull people from the water after a loading dock collapsed on Saturday.

The Savannah Fire Department says in a news release Curry suffered a “medical condition” during the rescue. He was transported to the hospital and was pronounced dead Saturday afternoon.

As many as 30 people were injured and 13 were hospitalized as a result of the dock collapse.

A scholarship has been created for Curry’s 8-year-old son.
