PHENIX CITY, Ala. — One Phenix City man got off work early to go vote Tuesday only to find out he wouldn’t get the chance.
James Smith says when he gave poll workers his name, it wasn’t in the system. Election officials say he had a felony on his record, but Smith says he’s never been arrested.
He had been mixed up with another person with the same name. He says the election officials changed his voting status Wednesday, but it comes one day too late.
“Ain’t no telling how many other people they did the same way, but they didn’t go into it deep like I did. It’s been on my mind all day so, I’m glad I did get something straightened out so, I’d like to take it farther,” Smith says.
Smith recently changed his address, but a letter was mailed to his old address notifying him he wouldn’t be allowed to vote.
