NEW YORK — Fighting emotion, defeated presidential candidate Hillary Clinton calls for a peaceful transfer of power to President-elect Donald Trump. Clinton tells her supporters Trump deserves an “open mind” and a “chance to lead.”

Clinton says in her concession speech Wednesday morning she’s “sorry” she didn’t win the election, adding “this is painful, and it will be for a long time.”

However, she goes on that Americans are still “stronger together” and says, “If we stand together and work together, with respect for our differences, strength in our convictions, and love for this nation, our best days are still ahead of us.”

During the speech addressing supporters and campaign aids in New York, she acknowledges America has not “shattered that highest and hardest ceiling”, referring to her failed bid to be the first woman serving in the White House. But she says, “someday, somebody will.”

Clinton also directed comments to the “little girls who are watching.” She says, “you are valuable and powerful and deserving” of every opportunity in the world.

She urges them to strive to pursue their dreams, whatever they may be.

Clinton says this presidential race has been “one of the greatest honors” of her life.
