COLUMBUS, Ga. – There were a few surprises in the first release of the College Football Playoff rankings for 2016, but the team at the top was not one of them. Alabama, the defending national champion, own the No. 1 spot with a 8-0 record and another top 15 opponent on the horizon this weekend. The Crimson Tide travel to Death Valley for a 8 pm showdown against No. 13 LSU.
Alabama’s opponent in last year’s national championship game, Clemson, claim the No.2 spot. The Tigers are followed by Michigan, Texas A&M and Washington. The Aggies, 7-1 on the season, are ahead of the 8-0 Huskies, however their only loss came against top-ranked Alabama.
Auburn, winner’s of five straight games, come in at No. 9. The Tigers host Vanderbilt at noon (EST) on Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
Gus Malzahn’s team began the year losing two of their first three games. However, those losses have come against No. 2 Clemson and No. 4 Texas A&M.
Auburn and Alabama will meet in Tuscaloosa at Bryant-Denny Stadium in the Iron Bowl on Nov. 26.
