Police raise the death toll in a school bus crash with a commuter bus to six people – including the school bus’ driver. Police say 10 people were also injured in the collision.
A Baltimore Police tweet says that no children were aboard the school bus that crashed at about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Baltimore Police spokesperson T.J. Smith says in a public briefing the school bus rear ended a Mustang and continued to hit a cemetery pillar.
“It literally looks like a bomb exploded in the bus. It’s catastrophic damage.”
“The bus struck that pillar and then continued eastbound where it went into oncoming traffic and struck an MTA bus on its driver’s side and basically ripped the entire driver’s side off of the vehicle,” he says. “It literally looks like a bomb exploded in the bus. It’s catastrophic damage.”
A two people were on the school bus – a driver and an aide, Smith notes. Investigators say the aide survived the crash. Investigators believe about 13 people were on the transit bus.
Baltimore public schools spokeswoman Anne Fullerton says no students are among the fatalities.
University of Maryland Medical Center spokeswoman Lisa Clough says the hospital received one patient in critical condition and four others in fair condition.
