VALLEY, Ala. — A 10-month-old boy is back in his mother’s arms Monday morning after his father held him from police in a three hour armed standoff.

A press release from the Valley Police Department says officers were called to the 300 block of Martin Luther King Drive about a domestic dispute at 11:13 PM Sunday night.

Officers say they found 20-year-old Danika Hutchinson who said a man with a gun had locked himself in a home with their son.

She says she got into an argument with 26-year-old Jarez Ricks over who the baby would stay with before Ricks hit her several times, choked her to the point of almost passing out, and pointed a gun at her, threatening to kill her and their son. Hutchinson says she managed to escape to call police.

The release says officers tried to contact Ricks and make sure the baby was alright, but Ricks would not come to the door or cooperate. When Chambers County SWAT arrived, they found Ricks was no longer in the home.

Negotiators were able to find Ricks several doors down from the original house and convinced him to let the baby go, according to the press release.

An agent was able to take the baby from Ricks and the boy was reunited with his mother just after 2 AM Monday. Police say Ricks stayed barricaded in the house until he surrendered at about 3 AM.

Major Mike Reynolds said these type of situations can be very stressful.

“On the one hand, you know that you have a person inside a barricaded home that at last report was armed, and if you have to go in on them, you’re going into an unknown situation,” Major Reynolds said. “The SWAT Team trains for that, but it’s a very hair raising experience.”

Ricks is now in the Chambers County Jail charged with Domestic Violence by Strangulation.

Major. Reynolds says the Valley Police Department would like to thank the Chambers County SWAT team and Lanett Police Department for their assistance in bringing this situation to a peaceful conclusion.
