COLUMBUS, Ga. — Shots were fired in the middle of a Columbus neighborhood Thursday afternoon.

Police say officers were looking into a possible burglary in progress when they heard gunshots. They went to the intersection of Josephine and Chalbena Avenue and found two cars, a silver Mitsubishi Montero and a red car, parked next to each other.

Witnesses say they saw people in both cars shooting at each other.img_5180

Police say the cars sped off, but they were able to stop the red car and took three people in for questioning.

Another officer pursued the Montero, but called off the chase because of heavy traffic. The Montero was later found abandoned on Wickham Drive and turned out to be stolen.

Police continue to investigate and the driver of the Montero is still on the loose.
