COLUMBUS, Ga. – Northside’s Hannah George out-dueled her future teammate at the University of North Carolina as the Lady Patriots swept Cartersville with a pair of 2-0 wins to advance to the GHSA 4A Elite Eight. George racked up seven strikeouts in game two, as she shutout the Hurricanes and standout pitcher Hannah Todd in back-to-back wins. George, a junior at Northside, and Todd, a senior at Cartersville, are both committed to play college softball for the Tar Heels.
In game one, Northside’s Kayson Boatner hit a two-run home run to provide the only run support George would need.
The state tournament is October 27-29 at South Commons in Columbus, Georgia.
Several other area teams also played in doubleheaders in round two of the playoffs including Northside’s class 4A rivals Columbus who were swept by Marist 3-0 and 11-1. In class 5A Harris County split with Carrollton 5-2 and 5-3 to force a decisive game three on Thursday.
In class 1A, Schley County won game two 3-2, after dropping game one 14-3. Game three will be Thursday for a spot in the Elite Eight. Also in class 1A, Marion County was swept by Wilcox County 5-1 and 12-2.
Brookstone was swept in the 1A private school tournament by Stratford Academy 6-1 and 9-1.
