CPD arrests man connected to taxi driver murder


UPDATE: Columbus police say a man is in jail connected to the murder of taxi driver found shot to death in his cab Monday morning.

20-year-old Dontavis Screws was arrested Wednesday after the Homicide Unit requested the Columbus Police Department SWAT team to execute a search/arrest warrant at a home on Forsyth Street.

Screws will be charged with Dewayne Chronister’s murder and his court appearance will be Saturday, October 22 at 8 a.m.

Police say the investigation is on-going and they expect more arrests and more charges to follow.

COLUMBUS, Ga — Columbus police release the name of a man found shot to death in his taxi cab saying they hope to find anyone who knew him.

A police report identifies the victim as Dewayne Chronister who was found shot early Monday morning. Lieutenant Greg Touchberry says Chronister was shot some time between 4:30 a.m. and 5:50 a.m. at the Parkwood Estates Mobile Home Park.

He says Chronister was taken to Midtown Medical Center for treatment where he later died.

Deputy Coroner Charles Newton says investigators could not find next of kin for Chronister.

Touchberry says police chose to release his name hoping someone who knew him will come forward.
