KILLEN, Ala. – The 20th-ranked Columbus State University men’s golf team turned in three strong rounds and took second place at the TVA Credit Union Invite. The tournament was played Monday and Tuesday at the Turtle Point Yacht & Country Club.
The Cougars posted rounds of 289, 284 and 292 to finish at one-over par with a three-round total of 865.
Eleventh-ranked North Alabama (854) captured the title at its home tournament, leading the field wire-to-wire. Henderson State (877) finished a distant third, while Lee (878) and Harding (887) rounded out the top five.
Redshirt-junior Gideon van der Vyver recorded the best finish of his career, taking second place. van der Vyver posted the CSU drop score in the opening round with a four-over par 76, but he bounced back in a big way with rounds of 67 and 68 to close out the tournament at five-under.
Philipp Matlari made it a pair of Cougars in the top-10, coming in at ninth. The freshman shot even par in each of Monday’s first two rounds before shooting a two-over 74 on Tuesday. It was Matlari’s best finish of the season and his second top-10 showing.
Matt Zerbel posted his best finish of the season after rounds of 71, 74 and 75. At four-over for the tournament, the freshman was tied for 12th place overall.
Cole Cruickshank and K.J. Lee rounded out the Cougar lineup, with both tying for 14th. Cruickshank carded scores of 71, 74 and 76 and finished at five-over. Playing in his first tournament of the season, Lee sandwiched rounds of 75 around a second-round 71.
The second-place showing wraps up the fall season for the Cougars. CSU progressed forward throughout the fall, ending with a pair of top-three performances. The spring schedule will be announced at a later date.
