Murder leads to standoff with Lee Co. deputies, suspect shot and killed

UPDATE: Sunday, 12:45 a.m. CDT

Lee County officials identify the woman shot dead at her Lee Rd. 851 home as 38-year-old Erica Murphy. Murphy was allegedly shot with a shotgun by her husband, Lee County deputies believe.

After four hours of negotiation between the suspect, 38-year-old Daniel Murphy, and deputies, communication ceased. Daniel Murphy then pointed a weapon at deputies with a laser sight. Deputies called out for him to drop the weapon. However, Murphy refused and was eventually shot by an officer.

Lee County Coroner Bill Harris pronounced Murphy dead at 10:25 p.m. CDT. No one else was injured in the standoff situation.

UPDATE: Saturday, 11:45 p.m. CDT

Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones confirms to News 3 that the man believed to have shot a woman inside a home on Lee Road 851 was killed late Saturday night.

Sheriff Jones says after a four-hour negotiation period with the barricaded suspect and a teen inside the home, the suspect pointed what appeared to be a laser (possibly attached to a weapon) at a law enforcement officer. At that point, the officer shot the suspect dead and ended the standoff. The relationship between everyone involved in the shooting is currently unclear.

Because of the officer-involved shooting, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency will assume the investigation.


LEE COUNTY, Ala. — The Lee County Sheriff’s Office, along with multiple law enforcement agencies, are investigating a shooting death at a home on Lee Road 851. Capt. Van Jackson tells News 3 that the incident happened at 3:38 p.m. CDT. Lee County Coroner The 38-year-old victim’s 18-year-old son took her to St. Francis Hospital after she was shot. The woman later died at the hospital, where deputies first learned of the incident. Capt. Jackson says the sheriff’s office is investigating this case as a murder.

Details about the suspect are unclear at this point. However, Lee County technical team members and police officers from Auburn are on the scene, as well as the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and fire department. The neighborhood the home is in has evacuated at the request of law enforcement.
