BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP/WBTV) — A teenager has been arrested four days after a 64-year-old Army veteran was fatally shot in his own driveway during an apparent robbery.
Birmingham police spokesman Lt. Sean Edwards tells news outlets that 18-year-old Joseph Cook Jr. was arrested Wednesday and charged with capital murder in the death of Calvin Gunn.
Edwards says Gunn’s home surveillance camera system shows Cook at the crime Saturday night.
Police believe Gunn and his wife of 35 years were returning home Saturday night when they encountered three men who were waiting. At least one was armed.
Police say they believe the suspect was trying to rob Gunn before shooting him. Gunn was shot and transported to a hospital, where he later died.
“I believe he was trying to protect his wife because we know this individual was trying to possibly take money or rob him,” Edwards says.
Cook is being held without bond and is being transferred to the Jefferson County Jail.
It was not immediately clear whether Cook has an attorney.
