COLUMBUS, Ga — Local churches prepare to open doors Friday to evacuees fleeing Hurricane Mathew.

The Columbus chapter of Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster – VOAD – says members worked with several churches in the Valley to put together supplies and places to sleep for anyone forced to leave their homes.

Local VOAD President Jennell Menefee says there are many other places who hopes to work with and open as many shelters as needed.

“There’s over 600 churches in the Columbus community and there is not that many other various faith based organizations,” Menefee says.
