The American Red Cross says blood drive cancellations continue to rise as Hurricane Matthew nears Georgia and South Carolina. The Red Cross has already had to cancel about 30 of their blood drives in Georgia and South Carolina because of the storm.
They say this is causing 1,200 blood and platelet donations to go uncollected. Adelaide Kirk with the local Red Cross chapter says there is already a need for blood.
More blood drive cancellations are possible along the southern east coast.
“This week and into over the weekend and next week.and so when that happens our blood supply shrinks even more so, it’s so important that if you can give blood especially type O positive then to please go give blood because it can be shipped to where it needs to go,” Kirk said.
The Red Cross continues to encourage folks who are eligible to give the gift of life.
