Fort Valley State University students hold vigil for classmate killed in car crash

COLUMBUS, Ga (WMAZ) — The Columbus man killed in an accident Wednesday morning in Warner Robins was a senior at Fort Valley State University, according to the school’s website.

Gary Earl Johnson Jr. died in the single-vehicle accident at after midnight on Russell Parkway and Red Fox Run, according to Warner Robins police.

Students held a candlelight vigil for Johnson at 8 p.m. near Patton Hall, according to the school’s website.

“Our campus community is mourning the loss of this dynamic, young man,” vice provost Donta Truss states on the FVSU website. “The loss is resonating across campus and has left our student body dismayed. At FVSU, we deeply feel every loss such as this because we are such a tight knit family. We have sent our condolences to the family and will be reaching out to inquire about how we can assist further.”

Johnson was a liberal arts major and was scheduled to graduate in December, according to the school’s website. He was also a drum major in the school’s band and a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity, FVSU’s release says.

Johnson and his wife have one son and are expecting another child in December.

Details on funeral arrangements and/or memorial services are still pending.
