University of South Carolina confirms Georgia game will be played in Columbia, S.C.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The University of South Carolina plans to play their football game against Georgia in Columbia, South Carolina, despite possible complications from Hurricane Matthew. There was speculation the game would be moved to the Georgia Dome or possibly Athens, Georgia. The game is currently scheduled for a 7:30 pm kickoff on Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium. USC released a statement on Wednesday that in part reads, “the game will be played in Columbia, S.C.” There are reports the game may be moved to Sunday or Monday. A decision regarding the game will be on Thursday. The full release from the university is below.

Statement issued by the University of South Carolina

7:15 p.m., Oct. 5, 2016

The University of South Carolina and its athletics department are continuing to monitor the movements of Hurricane Matthew as it relates to the scheduled football game with the University of Georgia. We are in communication with the National Weather Service, state and local authorities and the SEC regarding potential weather issues.

We anticipate a decision about the game to be made on Thursday. The safety of everyone affected by the storm and the minimization of the impact on emergency personnel are the most important factors in making the decision.

The USC vs. UGA game will be played in Columbia. Currently, kickoff is still slated for 7:30 pm Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium.
