Ga. – Six American Red Cross shelters are open as of Tuesday night throughout Georgia as Hurricane Matthew is nearing the Florida coast. The Red Cross stands ready to open up to 24 shelters across Georgia.
Adelaide Kirk with the American Red Cross of West Central Georgia says they’re prepared to open two shelters in Columbus for evacuees if needed.
“We’ve already had a request in Peach County, which is Fort Valley, not very far from here and Byron, Georgia to open a shelter and both of those from local officials because they’re already seeing evacuees coming up from Florida so, we’re getting up from Florida and then in from the coast of Georgia,” Kirk said.
Kirk says their chapter has been planning for the last two days because the whole Georgia coastline is at risk. She expects most of the impact to occur Friday into Saturday.
