PHENIX CITY, Ala. — A Troy University student helps the community in a unique way. The school’s 2014 and 2015 homecoming queen Lydia Roscoe says she uses plastic grocery bags to make mats for the homeless.
She cuts the bags up and makes them into plarn, or plastic yarn. She then crochets them into mats.
Roscoe says it’s in her heart to reach out to people no matter who they are.
“I want them to know that they’re loved no matter who they are and what they’re going through and that we care for them. So, it’s not just only me crocheting the mats, but it’s different women and throughout the community to do this wonderful project,” she says.
Roscoe says it takes 500 to 700 bags to make one mat depending on the size. Roscoe partners with United Way to make the mats.
