Employers can ban dreadlocks at work

COLUMBUS, Ga.- The Federal Appeals Court ruled that employers who ban dreadlocks in the workplace are not engaging in racial discrimination.

The 11th U.S. circuit court of appeals voted 3-0 last week to uphold a lower court’s dismissal of a 2013 lawsuit filed by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

A Mobile woman claimed she was discriminated during the hiring process for having dreadlocks.

Locs are either intentionally or unintentionally matted and sculpted ropes of hair.

A spokeswoman for the EEOC told The Wall Street Journal they believe the court made the wrong decision.
