COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Columbus State University volleyball team bounced back Tuesday night sweeping Albany State 3-0 (25-13, 25-22, 25-12) in a non-conference match at the Lumpkin Center.
Savannah Miller had a match leading 11 kills to pace Columbus State. Megan Frame had another outstanding night hitting .429 with eight kills in 14 chances. Sophomore Malaisia Stallworth had a season high seven kills.
Abby King had 30 assists while Caytlin Merritt had a team leading 16 digs.
“I felt like we executed well tonight,” said CSU head coach Casey Cornett. “We have plenty to work on, but it was great to see some of our other players get out there and play well.”
It took a while for Columbus State (7-3) to find its rhythm, but it came midway through the first set. Down 7-6, CSU went on a 13-2 run to take a commanding 19-9 lead. Miller played great during the spurt collecting five kills.
CSU finished the set strong winning four of the final five points to take the set 25-13.
Albany State (2-7) played well to begin the second set, racing out to a 12-6 lead. Needing to rally, the Lady Cougars strung together five straight points to cut the deficit to 12-11.
The Lady Cougars eventually took a 16-15 lead, but the Lady Rams didn’t go down quietly, jumping back in front 19-16.
Columbus State once again dug deep and rallied back. CSU won six of the next seven points to put them ahead 23-21. Sabrina Rodgers had a big ace for the Lady Cougars while Melissa Murray collected a kill. CSU capped off the set with a Frame kill and an ASU error.
Set three was all Columbus State as the Lady Cougars capped off the sweep. With Columbus State up 6-5, the Lady Cougars extended their lead to 13-5 after a run of seven straight points. CSU ended any hopes of a comeback after winning six straight points to go ahead 19-9.
As a team, CSU hit .198 and had six blocks.
Columbus State will now hit the road for a three-match road trip. On Friday, CSU takes on Francis Marion in Florence, S.C. before taking on UNC Pembroke on Saturday in Pembroke, N.C.
