CITRONELLE, Ala. — The Citronelle Fire Department says it is investigating how a home burned down Sunday morning. The same house was also the crime scene where five adults and an unborn child were brutally murdered two weeks before.
Firefighters say they were called to the house on Jim Platt Road Sunday night at around 8 a.m. They say when they got there, only the cinder blocks the house had been sitting on were left.
A cousin of the former homeowners say they never got the chance to get pictures or keepsakes of the murder victims out of the home. They say they planned to keep them for the victims’ young children to remember their parents.
“We’re gonna have to tell them how their momma was, how their daddy was. It’s kinda hard to explain stuff like that to babies,” says Rhonda Jordan-Henson. She is the cousin to Shannon Randall and her common-law husband Adam Turner.
Randall, Turner, and Randall’s brother Robert Brown were found dead August 20. Justin Reed and his pregnant wife Chelsea Reed were also killed.
Police arrested Derrick Dearman of Leakesville, Mississippi in connection to the massacre. They say Dearman allegedly used a gun and axe to murder the family before kidnapping his former girlfriend and a baby from the home.
Dearman says he was on methamphetamine at the time of the killings.
While he was being led to jail, he told reporters waiting outside, “I don’t deserve to live.”
Fire investigators now say they will try and find out if the house fire was arson.
