Columbus man dies after being assaulted at Labor Day BBQ

COLUMBUS, Ga — A local man is dead Tuesday after police say he was hit in the head during a Labor Day celebration at Oakland Park.

Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan tells WRBL 47-year-old Joseph Davis was being bullied Monday afternoon when someone hit him in the head.

According to News 3’s media partner The Ledger-Enquirer, one witness tells police he heard a “big impact” and saw the victim fall to the ground. Another witness says, “The next thing I knew, Joe was on the driveway.”

Columbus police Major Gil Slouchick says Davis was examined at Midtown Medical Center for internal bleeding and swelling in his brain before he was transferred to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

Davis died from his injures Tuesday morning at 3:38 a.m.

Bryan says Davis’ body will now be taken to the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur for a full autopsy.

Slouchick says police will now investigate Davis’ death as a homicide.
