OPELIKA, Al- With all the bad news going on these days… some folks in Opelika wanted to do something about it. This afternoon, people gathered in Municipal Park downtown for the simple cause of celebrating love. The day was filled with free food, fellowship, and lots of– love.
Raven Harvis says it’s a day long overdue.
“We have had a lot of negative stuff going on nationally, and you know, you just want to have an opportunity to bring people out to do things that are going to be positive to allow for us to have some type of respect and love for other human beings. So, that’s why wanted to have this event here in Opelika,” Harvis says, who is organizer of the event in Opelika.
The “Love U Love U” event is the invention of business woman Monique Rogers Henley– a Mobile, Alabama, native. A very active member of her community, she, too, believes we need to spread more love.
Opelika was the first to hold its day for the Lee County area. Similar days are scheduled next weekend throughout Alabama. And if reaction today is any indication, it’s an idea sure to catch on.
“I think it’s great. It brings the whole community together from all different backgrounds, and both sides of town, it’s great,” says Patrick Rickabaugh of Opelika.
“Love U Love U” days will be held next weekend in Mobile, Shelby, Montgomery, and Jefferson counties. To find out more about the “Love U Love U” movement, please click here.
