Ga. officer fired after being accused of being drunk on duty

GROVETOWN, Ga. (AP) — Police say a Grovetown police officer has been fired after being caught drunk while on duty.

Grovetown Police Chief Scott Wheatley says Kevin McDonald was terminated Aug. 8 after supervisors found him filling out paperwork while under the influence of alcohol.

He says McDonald was completing the paperwork on Aug. 6 after making an arrest when his supervisor smelled alcohol on him.

McDonald was given a blood-alcohol test. He tested positive for alcohol with a .087 level, but was not arrested since he was not seen driving while intoxicated.

Wheatley says McDonald had been with the Grovetown Police Department for only a few months at the time of the incident.

Grovetown is just west of Augusta.
