And this weekend’s highlighted event is Young Eagles Day where kids ages 8 to 17 can fly over Columbus with volunteer pilots! The free event is Saturday morning from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. edt at Flightways at the Columbus Airport.
“The kids love it. I know the pilots say they most enjoy the look on the kids faces when they see and experience flight for the first time or even if they’ve been up before, the kids are always excited about it,” says Chattahoochee Valley EAA Chapter 677 Volunteer and Board Member Allen Allnoch.
Young Eagles is a program apart of the national Experimental Aircraft Association. Local chapter pilots volunteer their time, planes and fuel to fly kids around Columbus every last Saturday of the month.
“The main purpose of Young Eagles is to introduce children to aviation – to get them involved, and if they’re really interested in it there’s a track they can follow. They can get a link to some free ground school lessons and really follow it all the way up to a private pilot certificate if they’re that interested in it. It’s designed to guide them along that path,” says Allnoch.
