Vermont Baked Beans


  • 1 lb. dry great northern beans
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • Salt pork, ham hock, or bacon pieces
  • 1 tsp. of salt
  • 1/2 tsp. of black pepper
  • Water to cover
  • Instructions:
  • Soak great northern beans in water overnight.
  • Drain and cover with fresh water then gently boil them for 30 minutes.
  • Remove from stove and drain again.
  • In the bottom of a bean pot or baking dish,  place piece of salt pork, ham hock or bacon.
  • Add drained beans.
  • To one pound of beans add: 1 teaspoon of salt , 1 cup of sugar, & 1/2 tsp. of pepper.
  • Add water to cover and give it a stir!
  • Cover with lid or foil and bake at 350 degrees for about 3 hours, making sure to add water every hour.
  • Remove lid to brown the top for an additional hour or so.  Enjoy!
