WEST POINT, Ga. – The former mayor of West Point now has a new title: sole GOP contender in the 3rd Congressional District. Drew Ferguson outlasted Georgia State Senator Mike Crane Tuesday night, earning 54% of the vote. He will now face Democrat Angela Pendley in November for the general election. The winner of that race will replace Republican Rep. Lynn Westmoreland, who is stepping down. Ferguson earned Westmoreland’s endorsement, as well as several other political figures’ blessings in the race. However, now that the runoff has run its course, Ferguson’s mind turns toward the general election.

“We have a lot of work ahead of us because it’s going to be a competitive race in the 3rd district,” Ferguson told News 3. “We’re not going to slow down one bit.”

News 3 was the only media outlet at Ferguson’s victory party. During a speech, Ferguson hugged his family and thanked Congressman Westmoreland for his support in the race. The mayors of Hogansville, LaGrange, West Point and Valley were all in attendance. Along with thanking supporters and staff on his campaign, Ferguson addressed the elephant in the room: his charge to elect Donald Trump in November. He says this election will determine the future of the Supreme Court.

“If you look at the presidential race, there’s a lot of excitement there,” Ferguson said. “The numbers are going to be high.”

Crane’s campaign sent along the following statement in response to the results of Tuesday’s runoff election:

“Although the numbers did not fall in our favor, Tracey and I are humbled by the love and support we’ve received during this campaign. It has been an incredible journey spreading the message of freedom and liberty throughout our great district and we will always stand for those values. Tracey and I want to congratulate Drew and his family on a hard fought campaign and we wish him the best as our next Congressman.”
