Columbus man arrested after police say he lead them on a chase

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Columbus Police have a man behind bars after they say he lead them on a chase early Saturday morning. Police tell News 3 an officer found Kennedy Fortson around the Fort Benning Road and Victory Drive area, driving a 2015 Hyundai Sonata, which was reported stolen Friday night. The chase started once Fortson, 24, refused to pull over when police pulled behind him.

When the chase ended around 2:30 a.m., police found Fortson was carrying a gun. However, his arrest was peaceful.

He now faces the following charges, according to Columbus Police:

  1. Hijacking a motor vehicle
  2. Aggravated Assault
  3. Unlawful possession of firearm
  4. Possession of firearm during commission of a crime
  5. Obstruction of officer
  6. Fleeing to elude law enforcement
  7. Striking fixed object
  8. Giving wrong information
  9. Reckless driving
  10. No state drivers license/proof of insurance
  11. Rules for driving on roadway
  12. Participant in gang criminal activity
  13. Convicted felon in possession of firearm

Fortson has a preliminary hearing in Recorder’s Court at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
