LAGRANGE, Ga. – Amid national violence in the past week, random acts of kindness are pervading the Chattahoochee Valley. Columbus Police have received barbecue and pizza in the last couple of days. In LaGrange, people are bringing flowers, cards, cakes, and other items to show support for the police department.

Kindness goes a long way for patrol officer Monica Peterson. When Peterson came to work the Friday after the Dallas ambush, in which five officers lost their lives at the hands of a sniper, she says her thoughts first went out to the officers who lost their lives and their families. She adds that through the outpouring of support she’s seen in the last few days, she is reminded of why she joined the force ten years ago. Peterson says the love extends to the entire police department.

“We have come together really well as a department,” Peterson said. “We are checking on each other, being around each other, we are comforting each other. We are praying together. It’s made us more of a family than we ever were before.”

Peterson says despite the violence she faces everyday, she continues to police because she wants to take care of her community.

“I have a family of my own, and regardless of what happens in the world, this is still my community,” Peterson told News 3. “I’m still going to give everything I have for them.”

Peterson believes local communities and police departments can prevent violence as seen in Dallas. She says engagement and interaction are key to understanding certain issues that may lead to unwanted violence in the future.
