WEST POINT, Ga. — The Troup County Coroner says 17-year-old Juantae Harper was shot and killed around 10 a.m. Tuesday morning in Oak Terrace Apartments.
Marcia Crim lives directly across the street from Oak Terrace Apartments. Crim says she thought the gunshots were firecrackers.
“I was really shocked because I’ve been living here over 15 years and we have never had anything like that to happen here and I just never assumed that could have happened,” she says.
Captain Kevin Carter with the West Point Police Department was at the scene throughout the day Tuesday.
“At about 10 a.m. We received a call into an individual being shot. Almost immediately after that officers arrived on scene to find the individual,” he says.
Carter says he has not seen any crimes of this magnitude occur in this neighborhood before.
“This is a pretty, I’m not going to say quiet area, but especially nothing to this magnitude. Just small stuff basically. Nothing major,” Carter explains.
Crim says she’s concerned in light of what’s happened.
“I worry about my safety now and my grandson’s safety. I never worried about us before, but I do now because I don’t know what can happen over there now,” Crim says.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting the West Point Police Department in this investigation. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call Troup County Crime Stoppers at 706-812-1000.
