COLUMBUS, Ga. – Police are searching for 17-year-old Lernard Bonner in connection with a shooting that left another teenager dead. Coroner Buddy Bryan says 16-year-old Lekeshia Moses was shot in the face at an apartment in Wilson Homes Friday morning.
Margaret Francis was walking to her mailbox Friday morning when she says she heard about two gunshots.
“I said Lord have mercy because I started to drop to the ground because normally I do. That’s the thing I do. I get scared and panic and I just said Lord what is going on? I hope nobody ain’t shoot nobody,” she explained.
She later found out that Moses was shot and died from her injuries. Police say the shooting happened just before 9:30 Friday morning.
Francis has been living in the Wilson Homes apartment complex for 15 years.
“That hasn’t been the first shooting out here. For years for being out here there have been several shootings and for our neighborhood to be safe, we all need to pray together and stick together,” Francis said.
She lives with her 11-year-old daughter. Francis says she worries about the safety of her daughter in the apartment complex.
“My daughter, she loves to be out playing and I tell her a lot of times you need to come on in because you don’t know when somebody’s going to start shooting,” she said.
Francis tells us she has trouble sleeping at night thinking about the violence throughout the community.
“I’m not going to be able rest just knowing, just knowing because it could be my child. You know, I think about that a lot,” she said.
Francis says her thoughts and prayers are with the family of Moses.
