Opelika man dies of accidental drowning at hotel pool

OPELIKA, Ala. – A man has drowned in a pool at the Quality Inn in Opelika on Columbus Parkway.

When Opelika Police and Opelika Rescue arrived on scene they found 37-year-old Ricky Thornton in the deep end of the pool.

Rescuers pulled him from the water and performed CPR. EAMC EMS transported Thornton to the emergency room at East Alabama Medical Center where efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. Thornton was pronounced dead at 3:02 p.m. Friday.

According to reports, Thornton had been under water for as long as 4-5 minutes before someone noticed something was wrong and dialed 911.

No foul play is suspected and the incident is being treated as an accidental drowning. Authorities do say alcohol may have been a factor in the accident.

Opelika Police and the Lee County Coroner continue their investigation.
