CHAMBERS COUNTY, Al — The Alabama Chamber’s County Sheriff’s office warns the public against phone scammers posing as police.
Major Mike Parish says in a statement people have reported getting calls from a person who tells victims there is an active warrant for their arrest. He says the person then tells victims they must pay a certain amount of money to clear their record.
Parish says officers will never conduct business in this manner and never to give out personal information over the phone without confirmation of identity.
The full release by Major Mike Parish:
We have received information that unknown individuals are calling citizens by phone posing as a law enforcement officer. The person(s) tell victims that warrants have been issued but if they pay a certain amount of money, he can clear their record. This is a SCAM. Law enforcement agencies do not conduct business in this manner and certainly not by phone. If you receive a call like this, DO NOT send money to anyone unless you can verify that you actually owe the money.
