Former high school football coach, wife accused of stealing from fundraisers

WAYNE COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) – The former Wayne County High School Football coach / Athletic Director Jody Grooms and his wife were arrested Tuesday.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation Agent in Charge said 47-year-old Grooms and his wife Sharon turned themselves in to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators say Grooms if facing one count of theft by taking from a fundraiser he was involved in.

Sharon Grooms, who was a teacher at Arthur Williams Middle School, is facing three counts of theft by taking for unaccounted money involving the High School Cheerleading team.

The investigation began when parents of the cheerleaders complained.

News 3 contacted the Wayne County School Superintendent who said Grooms submitted his resignation last week.

Grooms began working at Wayne County High School in 2010.
