Phenix City, Columbus police end search for car chase suspect

Columbus and Phenix City police are searching for a suspect that led them on a chase from Columbus, across into Phenix City before escaping on foot.

UPDATE:

12:10 PM — Police say they have stopped searching for the suspect that led them on a high speed chase from Columbus into Phenix City.

Phenix City Police Lieutenant Darrell Lassiter says they believe the suspect to be Ieshia Lockett. Lockett has outstanding felony warrants in both Phenix City and Columbus.

Police say they are now resorting to other methods to find and arrest their suspect.

Lassiter says police plan to release the passenger of the stolen car. He says they do not think she was involved in the theft.

PHENIX CITY, Al — News 3 is live on the scene where a high speed chase has stopped for police to go door-to-door searching for the escaped driver.

WRBL’s reporter says he can see Phenix City and Columbus officers going to each home starting at the intersection of 16th Street and 10th Avenue looking for the suspect.

Phenix City Police Lieutenant Darrell Lassiter says the chase began when Columbus police tried to make a traffic stop on a black Mercedes. Police say the car took off and crossed over into Phenix City where more officers became involved in the case.

Lassiter says they believe the suspect driving the car was Ieshia Lockett. He says Lockett has outstanding felony warrants in both Columbus and Phenix City for car theft. Lassiter confirms the black Mercedes involved in the chase was found at 1501 8th Avenue, Phenix City and it was also stolen.

He says police are dusting the car for prints now.

Chief photographer Kevin Roble says the Mercedes’ female passenger is in custody at the corner of 15th Street and 8th Avenue. Lassiter says police are still searching for Lockett.
