AUBURN, Ala.- With classes finishing this past weekend, parking will be free in Downtown Auburn this week until Friday, May 13.
The Code of Ordinances for the City of Auburn outlines certain holidays where parking will be free.
Those holidays are as follows: first day of January, Martin Luther King Day, Graduation Day of each semester at Auburn through the day prior to the first day of classes the following semester, spring break at Auburn, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Sales tax holidays, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Break for Auburn University and Christmas Day.
The city says downtown gets quiet after school lets out. The free parking helps promote shopping and dining in downtown.
Ronnie Ware, the co-owner of Ware Jewelers says they see a little less traffic in their store after graduation, but says they see a change in clientele. “It changes slightly because we see a lot more of the locals and less of the students so it’s a little different clientele,” Ware said. “It’s a great time to try to let the locals know that they can easily come downtown and do some shopping.”
People will have to pay for parking again on May 16 due to Auburn’s summer classes beginning.
