Muscogee Co. Sheriff Deputy arrested on battery charges

COLUMBUS, Ga. – A Muscogee County Sheriff Deputy has been arrested on battery charges.

Sheriff John Darr tells News 3 that 36-year-old Mark Whaley was arrested Monday morning on a misdemeanor battery charge involving his step-son.

Whaley was taken to the Muscogee County Jail and is currently on unpaid administrative leave.

Darr says at the the time of the incident, Whaley was working for the Columbus Police Department. Whaley then transferred over to the Sheriff’s office a few months ago.

Whaley is expected to be in court later this week to determine his bond.
