COLUMBUS, Ga. – Eleven candidates for judge, clerk and law enforcement positions met at Greater Bellwood Baptist Church Saturday afternoon to discuss their platforms. Incumbent Ron Mullins is facing Alonza Whitaker in the Superior Court Judge race for the Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit.
Ron Mullins has been on the bench for a little over two years.
“A good judge treats those persons who come in front of him or her with dignity and respect. The good judges that I practiced did those things and in my court room I try to do the same thing in terms of how I treat people,” Mullins said.
Alonza Whitaker currently serves as the Chief Assistant District Attorney for the Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit.
“I want to bring experience, integrity and justice for all to the bench,” Whitaker said.
Mullins says he approaches the people in every case with dignity and respect. He has plans to start Parental Accountability Court for people who are not meeting child support obligations.
“The purpose of the court will be to give these persons an opportunity to get job training to get a job and create an income stream so that they’re going to meet their obligations toward their children,” Mullins said.
Whitaker says if he elected, he will work to make sure cases on the trial docket actually make it to trial.
“I’m going to do everything I can to make sure a trial docket is just what it says. It’s a docket with cases that shall be tried,” Whitaker said.
Whitaker also values dignity in the court room. He says there is a way to send people to jail without destroying them.
Early voting is going on now through May 20th in Muscogee County at the Citizen Services Building. The primary election will be held May 24th.
