Train and cement truck crash in Opelika

OPELIKA, Ala. — Emergency crews are on the scene of a second train crash on Old Columbus Road.

A release by Opelika Police Department Captain Shane Healey says a train on the Norfolk Southern Line has hit a cement truck at 9:44 AM.

The release says the Norfolk Southern Line was closed until early this morning after a train derailed there Friday afternoon. Police say rain water washed out the ground under the rails, making them unstable.

The release says the Oconee Concrete truck was crossing a private crossing when it crossed in front of the train. Captain Healey says the driver of the cement truck and the crew on the train received no injuries.

Emergency crews are on scene while clean-up efforts are ongoing. The tracks are expected to be open as soon as possible.

A News 3 photographer is headed to the scene for details.
