Lee Co Sheriff: Animal cruelty investigation underway, horse left for dead

SALEM, Ala. – Investigators say a horse carcass was discovered along the side of the road in Lee County.

Salem resident Michelle Urueta and her friend were enjoying the sun and ATV-ing near her home on Lee Road 245, when they came across a bad smell. The first thing they saw was a rope hanging from a tree.

When they got closer, they saw a tarp laying over a bumpy figure. They removed the tarp and that’s when they saw the animal’s hooves tied up. They realized it was a horse. Investigators said this is the first time they’ve ever seen anything like this.

Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones made it clear that animal cruelty will not be tolerated. If a person is convicted of animal cruelty, in this particular case they would face a Class B misdemeanor in the state of Alabama, which is punishable by up to six months in jail.

An investigation is still underway and the Lee County Sheriff’s office is asking anyone with any information to contact them at (334) 749-5651.
